Lilium

  • Oriental lilies are upright growing, easy to grow fragrant Summer flowering herbaceous perennials, botanically known as Lilium. These hardy impactful growing plants are popular in UK gardens because of the impressive height that they grow too, ranging from 90 to 150 cm. Oriental lilies are loved by pollinating insects, in particular bees and butterflies. They can be left undisturbed and will flower for up to eight weeks during August and September.
  • These low maintenance, easy to grow flowering plants are perfect for growing in pots or containers but can be planted up in borders and beds. They can be used as cut flowers allowing you to enjoy them in your home and garden. Once every three or so years, dig up the clusters of bulbs and divide them to increase plants and enhance flowers.
  • If you are not ready to plant bulbs now, then store them in a cool, dry, frost free, well ventilated location. A garage, shed, loft or cupboard are ideal. Open the paper bag to allow air to circulate round but leave the bulbs in their bags until ready to plant. Just make sure mice or other rodents can’t get access to them. Keep an eye on your bulbs while in storage, if they are showing signs of going soft, it's best to get them planted before they deteriorate any further.
  • These bulbs are on pre-order for dispatch Early February 2025.

These bulbs should be planted in Spring in acidic soil, when the chance of Winter frosts have passed. Oriental lilies look best when planted in odd numbered groups. Plant them 10 to 15 cm deep, in a hole up to three times the size of the bulb. Space them 10 to 20 cm apart in fertile well draining soil in a sheltered area that gets full sun to partial shade. Lilies like a cold dormant phase through the Winter but it's important to ensure they have adequate drainage and not get waterlogged as this causes the bulbs to rot.
