Elderberry Plant - Deciduous Shrub
- The Sambucus Black Lace commonly known as Elderberry is a deciduous shrub that produces striking deep purple, almost black foliage and pink flushed blooms during the Summer. These flowers are then followed by red-black elderberries. In Autumn the leaves turn a rich red colour which will add interest to any planting scheme.
- Black Lace Sambucus likes to grow in moist but well draining soil, but can tolerate waterlogged, slightly chalky ground. For the best foliage colour, this plant prefers to grow in full sun - otherwise the foliage can turn a greenish-bronze which is also very attractive.

Best Growing Conditions
This frost hardy plant (down to -20C) is easy to grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun or part shade, and also thrives on extremely chalky sites. Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer or hardwood cuttings in winter. Will tolerate hard pruning to restrict the size; can be maintained as small shrub if desired.
