Elderberry Plant - Deciduous Shrub
- The Sambucus Blue Sheen commonly known as Elderberry is a deciduous shrub that produces reddish/deep pink foliage in the Spring, with a glossy blue sheen. The leaves then become a deeper red in the Summer and Autumn. Light pink flushed blooms appear during the Summer, which are then followed by black elderberries.
- Black Sheen Scambucus likes to grow in moist but well draining soil, but can tolerate waterlogged, slightly chalky ground. For the best foliage colour, this plant prefers to grow in full sun - otherwise the foliage can turn a greenish-bronze which is also very attractive.

Best Growing Conditions
This frost hardy plant (down to -20C) is easy to grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun or part shade, and also thrives on extremely chalky sites. Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer or hardwood cuttings in winter. Will tolerate hard pruning to restrict the size; can be maintained as small shrub if desired.
