Spring

  • Colchicum, commonly known as Autumn Crocus or Meadow Saffron, is a hardy bulbous perennial with goblet shaped flowers in shades of lilac, pink, and white. These striking blooms appear without foliage, creating a dramatic and unexpected display when most of the garden is winding down. Loved by gardeners for their late-season colour and unusual habit, Colchicum are perfect for adding interest to borders, rockeries, and grassy areas.

  • Plant Colchicum bulbs in well drained soil, about 10-15cm deep and 15cm apart. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot. After planting, water well to help establish. These bulbs require minimal care and will naturalise easily, returning each year with increased vigour. Once the blooms fade, foliage will emerge and persist through Spring, gathering energy for the next year’s flowers. Avoid disturbing the bulbs to allow them to multiply.

  • Ideal for borders, under deciduous trees, or informal lawns, Colchicum bulbs perform well in gravel gardens and alpine beds. Their tall, elegant flowers contrast beautifully with low growing ground cover or ferns. They also make a stunning statement when planted en masse and can be used in floral arrangements.
