Spring

  • Paeonia, commonly known as Peony, is a classic perennial prized for its large, fragrant, showy blooms that appear in late Spring to early Summer. These bare-root plants grow into robust, bushy clumps with attractive foliage and blooms in shades of pink, red, white or coral depending on variety. Perfect for cottage gardens or formal borders, peonies are also long-lived and ideal as cut flowers.

  • Plant bare-root peonies in Autumn or early Spring in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Position the eyes (buds) just 2-3cm below soil level to avoid poor flowering. Space plants around 60-90cm apart to allow for mature growth. After planting, water thoroughly to help establish roots. Mulch lightly in Spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Peonies are hardy across the UK and require little maintenance once established.

  • These hardy perennials are excellent for flower beds, borders, or mixed perennial planting schemes. Their bold structure and long-lasting blooms make them standout features in any garden. They pair beautifully with roses, irises, and delphiniums and thrive in sunny, sheltered spots. Their lush green foliage adds interest even when not in flower. Once settled, peonies are remarkably easy to care for. Avoid moving them once planted, as they do not like disturbance.
