- Rhubarb crowns are live low maintenance perennial dormant rhubarb plants that can be planted in Autumn and early Spring. Bare root rhubarb, produce plants that have large green leaves and tasty reddish pink stalks. Rhubarb crowns are perfect for UK growing and are a reliable way for growing multiple varieties of Rhubarb in garden fruit vegetable patches or in allotments.
- Rhubarb crowns are easy to grow and will provide high yielding crops in May to early July. The stalks have a tart, slightly sour flavour similar to lemon when eaten raw, that becomes sweeter when they are cooked. Cooked rhubarb can be used in a variety of sweets dishes such as pies, crumbles and muffins but can be used in savoury dishes or to make jams and chutneys.
- Bare root rhubarb is best planted in a sunny spot in well draining fertile soil, in Autumn or early Spring when the soil is warm and moist. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or extremely dry. When planting, space crowns two to three feet apart with the growing tip is just above soil level. Water regularly during hot, dry weather and especially through the crowns first growing season until it is well rooted.
- Rhubarb crowns can be stored before planting. Keep them in a cool, shady area for a few days, ensuring they are not exposed to direct sunlight. If the crowns appear dry, soak them in water for a few hours to rehydrate before planting, but avoid leaving them in bags as they could start to rot.
