  • Dahlia ‘Emory Paul’ truly shines in the yard, celebrated for its massive pink-purple blooms. These flowerheads are so striking, they often steal the show in late-summer borders. The flowers are at their prime, their petals plush and almost sculptural. They coil and twist, forming an eye-catching, multi-dimensional display. Planted en masse, the blooms take on a cloud-like appearance, infusing the landscape with a dramatic, abundant feel.

  • This particular type thrives in bright, well-drained locations, and it generously provides the gardener with sturdy stems. These stems are more than capable of supporting the plant's renowned, large flowers. Emory Paul is a go-to choice for cutting gardens. A single stem, placed in a vase, instantly transforms into a striking centrepiece, thanks to its impressive size and deep hue.

  • When you're holding onto the tubers before you put them in the ground, find a spot that's cold and dry, and make sure there's enough of air circulating around them. Paper bags, ventilated boxes, or mesh trays are all effective options. Keep an eye on the tubers, ensuring they stay firm. Plant them once the earth has warmed up; this gives the blooms the best chance to thrive.

Watering Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During active growth, water in prolonged dry spells so the soil stays lightly moist but never waterlogged. Once the foliage naturally dies back, reduce watering and allow the bulbs to rest more dryly.

Best Growing Conditions Plant in fertile, well-drained loam in sun or partial shade. Choose a position that does not stay waterlogged in winter, as good drainage helps bulbs return reliably. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can store energy for the following season.

    Top tip

Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can store energy for the following season. In colder parts of the UK, give it a sheltered position and provide winter protection during prolonged frost.
