Watering Keep the soil consistently moist while the crop is establishing and growing, especially during flowering, fruiting or rapid leafy growth. Water deeply at the base rather than little and often, allowing excess water to drain away. Plants in containers, grow bags or greenhouses may need daily checks during warm weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or light partial shade in acidic, well-drained ericaceous soil or compost. Keep the root zone evenly moist and use rainwater where tap water is very hard. A sheltered position helps protect blossom and developing fruit from strong winds.

Top tip

Tuck clean straw or another dry mulch beneath developing fruit to keep berries off damp soil and reduce splashing. Keep the root zone on the acidic side with ericaceous compost or suitable acidic soil, and avoid lime-based feeds.
