The Epipremnum 'Happy Leaf' Manjula Pothos is an unusual trailing houseplant with cream and white variegated leaves, flecked and splashed with green. Also known as devil's ivy, it's an easy-to-grow houseplant that works particularly well on shelves and in hanging planters.

Let the stems trail naturally or train the plant up a moss pole or similar support. When allowed to climb, the plant can mature faster and develop larger leaves. It prefers bright, indirect light but can also cope with some shade, although growth may be slower and the variegation less pronounced in lower light.

  • Cream and white variegation: leaves are patterned with cream, white and green
  • Trailing or climbing: let the stems trail from a shelf or hanging planter, or train them up a moss pole
  • Adaptable to light: prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade
  • Easy watering: allow the compost to approach dryness between waterings
  • Supplied in a 12cm pot: a handy size for shelves, desks and hanging displays

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration only and is not included.

As this is a natural product, each plant is individual and may show variation in shape, size and leaf pattern. Variegation naturally varies from leaf to leaf, so some may contain more white or cream, while others may be greener.

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

How do I care for a Manjula pothos?

Keep your Manjula pothos somewhere warm with bright, indirect light, protected from harsh direct summer sun. Allow the compost to approach dryness before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Feed once a month from April to October with a general houseplant fertiliser and water less frequently during winter.

Is Epipremnum 'Happy Leaf' safe for pets and children?

No. The RHS lists Epipremnum 'Happy Leaf' as harmful to humans and pets if eaten and advises keeping it away from children and pets. The plant can also irritate the skin and eyes, so wear gloves when handling or pruning it and wash your hands afterwards.

Why is my Happy Leaf losing its white variegation?

Too little light can cause Epipremnum to produce less variegated foliage and slower growth. If your Happy Leaf is becoming greener, move it to a brighter position with plenty of indirect light, while keeping it protected from harsh direct summer sun.

What size is it, and can it trail?

Our Epipremnum 'Happy Leaf' comes in a 12cm pot. Its stems naturally trail, making it suitable for shelves and hanging planters, or you can train it up a moss pole or similar support. Allowing it to climb can encourage the plant to mature and develop larger leaves.

Is the Happy Leaf pothos good for beginners?

Yes. Epipremnums are considered easy-to-grow, adaptable houseplants. Happy Leaf prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade, and it doesn't require high humidity. The main thing to avoid is overwatering, so allow the compost to approach dryness before watering again

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
