Sphagnum moss is a soft, fibrous moss that holds onto water like a natural sponge, which is exactly why growers reach for it before anything else. Fresh and still alive when it arrives, this live sphagnum moss works as well lining a hanging basket as it does packed around an orchid's roots.
Gardeners use it for a few different jobs. It's the classic liner for hanging baskets and wreath frames, since it's pliable enough to shape by hand and holds that shape once it's damp. It's also widely used by orchid growers because it holds moisture around the roots while still providing a lightweight growing medium, although care should be taken not to keep it excessively wet. In terrariums, it can be used within the substrate or as a moisture-retaining layer to help maintain humid conditions.
-
Versatile use: suitable for lining baskets and wreaths, potting orchids and creating terrarium displays
-
Holds water well: sphagnum moss can absorb many times its own weight, so it stays damp for longer between waterings
-
Comes ready to use: no soaking required before it goes into a basket, pot or terrarium
What you'll receive: a bag of fresh sphagnum moss in your chosen weight: 500g, 1kg or 5kg.
As this is a natural product, each bag is individual and may show variation in colour and texture, including small natural woodland debris such as fine twigs. That's normal for a wild-harvested moss, not a fault.

Watering Moss must be kept damp at all times, otherwise it soon gets brown and crispy and despite being fairly hardy, it will eventually die. If you can use rainwater to keep your moss moist, it will really appreciate the extra nutrients that rainwater offers. In a terrarium setting, if kept properly, it will not need watering as a terrarium environment should keep damp at all times. If outdoors, you will only need to check it every few days to make sure it’s still moist – more often in the summer.
Best Growing Conditions Moss needs to be kept out of direct sunlight, in a nice damp area and away from strong winds, draughts or radiators. This is what makes it so great for terrarium building – it loves the humidity. It can be left outside all year if you are using in your garden, but needs to be protected from full sun, hard frost and snow.
