- This Hypoestes phyllostachya Red, commonly known as the Polka Dot Plant, is a real live mini Indoor with a bushy growing habit, native to southern Africa, Madagascar and parts of south-east Asia. The plant is named for its spotted variegation on the leaves which look like polka dots.
- This polka dot plants' vivid and attractive foliage makes it the perfect gift for any house plant enthusiasts, and makes a perfect addition to a terrarium due to its preference for high humidity.
- The polka dot plant requires a warm and humid environment, with a minimum temperature of 15ºC and a humidity level of around 50 per cent. A warm bathroom is ideal, as long as there is sufficient light – polka dot plants thrive in bright but indirect sunlight and can stop growing if conditions are too dark. Water sparingly and remove developing flowers to keep plants looking their best.
- It is best to repot the plant in the spring or early summer when it is actively growing. Choose a pot one size larger than the current one to allow the roots to spread comfortably. Select a well-draining potting mix, carefully remove the plant from its current pot, and set your plant in the new pot and gently fill around the roots with soil. Water well once potted, avoid fertilising during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
