  • Catmint is a live vigorous outdoor growing herbaceous perennial, botanically known as Nepeta. This hardy flowering herb plant has aromatic felty grey leaves and produces flower spikes of lavender blue bell shaped flowers. During the months of May to July, pretty spikes of purple blue flowers appear.

  • Catmint is renowned for attracting cats, hence its name but the flowers also attract pollinating insects including bees, butterflies and moths. This plant has also received the RHS Plants for Pollinators seal of approval.

  • When used fresh or dried, Catmint is high in Vitamin C. The leaves make a refreshing and therapeutic tea which has traditionally been used to treat nervousness, insomnia, hyperactivity, colds and fevers. The flowers can also be dried to be used in pot pourri.

  • Nepeta is easy to grow in well draining soil and is drought tolerant. It does best in full sunlight but can cope with partial shade. Catmint can grow to a height up to 45cm and is ideal for growing in beds and borders in coastal gardens, cottage style gardens and wildlife gardens. It is also perfect for using as an edging plant along pathways.

Watering Water regularly after planting until the roots are established. Once settled in, the plant is relatively drought tolerant and usually only needs extra water during prolonged dry spells. Plants grown in containers will need more frequent watering than those growing in the ground.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in sandy. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Top tip

Harvest little and often to encourage fresh, bushy growth rather than allowing the plant to become overly woody or congested. It works particularly well in a borders setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
