Planting & Care Tips for Autumn Bedding

Autumn bedding plants bring a burst of colour just as summer fades. Here’s how to plant and care for them to keep your garden vibrant into the colder months.

  • When to Plant: Late summer to early autumn, giving roots time to settle before frost.
  • Soil: Use well-drained soil or containers with good drainage to prevent rot.
  • Light: Plant in partial shade to sunny spots—even morning light can help.
  • Watering: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulch lightly to protect roots.

Seasonal Display Ideas

With the right mix of plants, containers, and foliage, autumn displays can be just as striking as summer—and often last even longer.

  • Mix & Match: Combine pansies, violas, wallflowers, and cyclamen for months of colour.
  • Containers & Baskets: Use pots, window boxes, or hanging baskets to bring autumn colour closer to patios and entrances.
  • Foliage Interest: Look for bedding plants with textured or variegated leaves to extend displays beyond flowering.
  • Winter Transition: Many autumn bedding plants, such as hardy pansies, continue blooming into winter, keeping displays alive.
