If you want a beautiful houseplant that doesn’t need a lot of work, the Zamioculcas Zamiifolia or the ZZ Plant is an excellent choice. With upright stems and glossy deep green leaves it has a smart contemporary look that works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, offices and hallways. Another of the great things about the ZZ Plant is how easy it is to be around. It can tolerate lower light levels and it doesn’t mind if you forget to water it every now and again, making it especially useful for beginners or anyone with a busy lifestyle.

Place your ZZ Plant somewhere with bright, indirect light for the best growth, although it will happily tolerate shadier positions. Allow the compost to dry out between waterings and avoid leaving the roots sitting in water. During winter, it will need even less watering.

Slow growing, tidy and wonderfully low maintenance, Zamioculcas Zamiifolia 'ZZ' is an easy way to bring lasting greenery into your home without the fuss.

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration purposes only and is not included with the plant.

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
