If you are looking for a houseplant that is tough and slow-growing, the Zamioculcas Zamiifolia 'ZZ' houseplant can be the perfect pick. This is an exceptionally hardy and resilient plant that grows at a slower pace than other houseplants. Its stems grow upright and are lined with glossy, dark green leaves. This plant has a neat and modern look about it that suits spaces like a living room, bedroom, office or hallway.

Beneath the compost, the ZZ plant develops thick, potato-like rhizomes that store water and help it cope with occasional missed watering. These roots store water and allow the plant to cope with missed watering. Plus, it doesn't mind sitting and growing in a shaded spot. This makes it a good pick for beginners and busy homes. However, the ZZ plant still grows best in bright light without direct sun. It needs far less water than most houseplants, and watering it too much is the one thing that really harms it. When you order the ZZ houseplant from us, you can either buy one for a desk or two to frame a doorway. See more of our indoor plants.

  • It grows with upright stems and glossy, dark green leaves that keep the shine all year
  • The thick roots store water so that even if you miss watering it, the plant can still cope with dry spells
  • ZZ Plants tolerate lower light levels than many houseplants, although they grow best in bright, indirect light.
  • These plants grow slowly and tidy, keeping their shape with little fuss

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

How often should I water a ZZ plant?

Water your ZZ plant only when the compost has dried out completely. Water when the compost has dried out, allowing excess water to drain away. ZZ Plants generally need less frequent watering during winter, but the exact interval depends on their growing conditions.

Can a ZZ plant live in low light?

Yes, ZZ plants can tolerate lower light levels better than many other houseplants. They can grow in a hallway or shadier part of a room that still receives some natural daylight, although growth may be slower in these conditions. For healthier growth, place your ZZ plant in bright, indirect light and avoid harsh, direct sunlight.

Why are my ZZ plant's leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves, especially with soft stems, usually indicate the plant is getting too much water. Before you water the plant, wait until the compost is bone dry. Check the pot drains too, to ensure all excess water is draining away. If only one or two old leaves turn yellow while new growth looks healthy, that's just normal ageing.

Is the ZZ plant safe for pets?

No. Chewing it can upset a pet cat's or dog’s mouth and stomach. The sap can be irritating, too. Place it where cats, dogs and young children can't get to it.

Should I buy one or two ZZ plants?

You have the option of both at Carbeth Plants. One ZZ Plant suits a desk, shelf or small table. Two look smart as a matching pair either side of a sideboard, fireplace or doorway. Both options come in 12cm pots, and the plants grow slowly, so they stay neat for a long time.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
