  • Bergenia Herbstblüte, often called Pigsqueak, is a hardy perennial that thrives in both shady and partially shaded spots. It forms attractive clumps of large, shiny leaves, providing structure and visual appeal all year long.

  • In the spring, this variety bursts forth with lovely pink flower clusters, a vibrant contrast against the dark green foliage. The flowers are held aloft on strong stems, making them highly visible and effective in borders and mixed planting designs.

  • Gardeners appreciate Bergenia Herbstblüte for its low-maintenance requirements and its ability to endure, making it a great option for those who want reliable performance with minimal work. Supplied as a bare root plant, it establishes easily and comes back year after year, offering enduring beauty even during drier spells.

Watering Water regularly after planting until the roots are established. Once settled in, the plant is relatively drought tolerant and usually only needs extra water during prolonged dry spells. Plants grown in containers will need more frequent watering than those growing in the ground.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in partial shade to gentle sun in fertile loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Top tip

Harvest little and often to encourage fresh, bushy growth rather than allowing the plant to become overly woody or congested. It works particularly well in a borders setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
