Watering Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in a position with good natural light in a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

Top tip

Mulch around the root zone each spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. It works particularly well in a greenhouse setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
