  • Versatile Native Hedging Plant - Ligustrum Vulgare, commonly known as Wild Privet is a traditional British hedging choice, valued for its semi-evergreen foliage and dense growth. It creates an attractive boundary that blends seamlessly into both formal and informal garden settings.
  • Wildlife Friendly and Pollinator Friendly - Its small, fragrant white flowers in summer are highly appealing to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while the black berries that follow provide food for birds, making it an excellent choice for supporting local biodiversity.
  • Hardy, Resilient and Easy to Grow - Thriving in a wide range of soils and conditions, including coastal and urban areas, Wild Privet is tolerant of pollution and drought once established. It responds well to trimming, allowing you to maintain a neat hedge or leave it looser for a more natural look.

Watering Water regularly after planting until the roots are established. Once settled in, the plant is relatively drought tolerant and usually only needs extra water during prolonged dry spells. Plants grown in containers will need more frequent watering than those growing in the ground.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Protect from hard frost and cold, drying winds, especially while young or when grown in containers.

Top tip

Trim lightly during the growing season to build a dense framework, but avoid hard pruning while birds may be nesting. In colder parts of the UK, give it a sheltered position and provide winter protection during prolonged frost.
