The Philodendron Pink Princess is a climbing houseplant grown for its deep green leaves splashed with soft pink and cream. No two leaves share the same pattern, which makes every plant a little different. The young stems add a flash of red, too, which results in very pleasing aesthetics.

Put it in a bright spot out of direct sun, and it will settle happily in a living room, home office, or conservatory. Train it up a moss pole, and you'll get larger, showier leaves. It sits well beside our other rare and unusual plants.

  • Climbing habit: grows upwards with support, or trails loosely without it
  • Botanical name: Philodendron 'Pink Princess', often sold as Philodendron erubescens
  • Indoor only: needs warmth all year and won't survive outdoors in the UK
  • Two pot sizes: a 6cm starter plant or a larger plant in a 12cm pot

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration only and is not included.

As this is a natural product, each plant is individual and may show variation in shape, colour and size. The amount of pink varies naturally from leaf to leaf, and some leaves may be mostly green.

Plant genus Philodendron

Common Name Philodendron

Plant type Tropical Houseplant, Foliage Houseplant

Foliage type Evergreen, Perennial

Hardiness Tropical

Soil acidity Neutral

Flower colour Green, White

Leaf colour Green, Pink

Growth Rate Moderate

Edible Use No

Light Required Bright In-direct sunlight

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

How do I care for a Philodendron Pink Princess?

Give it bright, indirect light and warmth around 18 and 26°C. Water only when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry. Feed monthly in spring and summer, and add a moss pole once it starts to climb.

Is the Pink Princess safe for pets and children?

No. The RHS lists it as harmful if eaten, and the sap can irritate skin and eyes. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs and young children. For a safer choice, look at our cat friendly plants.

Which size should I choose, 6cm or 12cm?

The 6cm pot suits collectors who enjoy growing a plant from small or anyone short on shelf space. The 12cm pot gives you a larger Philodendron Pink Princess full size plant that looks settled straight away on a desk, sideboard or bookshelf.

How much light does a Pink Princess need?

It needs several hours of bright, indirect light each day. If it is placed in a dim corner, new leaves often come through mostly green. Do not place it in direct sunlight, as strong midday sun through glass can scorch the leaves. Instead, we recommend placing it in a spot set back slightly from a window.

Is the Philodendron Pink Princess good for beginners?

It's a fair choice if you've kept a few houseplants before. The basics are simple, but it needs good light, steady warmth and careful watering. If you are new to houseplants, check out our easy care indoor plants for a gentler start.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
