  • Acer palmatum 'Emerald Lace' is a Japanese maple that is highly prized for its finely cut leaves and its year-round colour changes. In the spring, the new leaves emerge in a bright lime green, instantly brightening the garden and creating an airy feel.

  • As the season progresses, the foliage frequently develops a faint red edge, a nice accent to the green; but in the autumn, 'Emerald Lace' really shines, with the leaves bursting into vibrant reds and oranges, creating a spectacular display.

  • Like all Japanese maples, Emerald Lace adds a sense of elegance, structure, and vibrant colour to any setting. Its graceful form and smaller stature ensure that it adds beauty without overwhelming the space, and it's ideal for larger pots, making it a great option for patios, courtyards, and terraces.

Watering Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Top tip

Mulch around the root zone each spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
