  • Aeonium Arboreum Schwarzkopf  is a showstopper, a succulent with real presence. Its large rosettes, a deep purple that borders on black, are the main attraction. The leaves, glossy and spoon-shaped, come together to form these striking rosettes atop strong stems, making a statement all on their own. It's a plant that shines as a focal point, whether in a pot, a contemporary garden, or even inside.

  • This particular variety grows upright by nature, and as it matures, it can branch out, becoming a multi-headed marvel. Aeonium Zwartkop is perfect for patio pots when the weather is warm, and it can easily be brought indoors or into a greenhouse that doesn't freeze during the winter months. The colour of its leaves becomes even more intense in bright light, which only adds to its visual appeal.

  • Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration purposes only and is not included with the plant.

Watering Allow the compost to dry well between waterings, then water thoroughly and let all excess drain away. These plants cope better with being slightly dry than sitting in wet compost, so never leave the pot standing in water. Reduce watering significantly through the cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright light with some gentle direct sun, ideally at around 15-24°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use well-drained soil and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. A warm, airy position and lower humidity suit this plant better than a steamy or constantly damp room.

Top tip

Give it plenty of light and resist watering on a fixed schedule; allowing the compost to dry between waterings is usually the safest approach. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
