With a combination of tubers and rhizomatous roots, American water plantain is excellent at filtering water and has been utilized throughout the U.K to help clean up and restore wetlands and water retention ponds.

    Watering Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

    Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in a suitable, free-draining growing medium. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Remove damaged or spent growth as it appears and keep the area around the plant free from weeds so air and light can reach the base. It works particularly well in a ponds setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
