The Aloe Vera Plant is an easy-care succulent with thick, fleshy green leaves arranged in an attractive rosette. Its clean, architectural appearance suits almost any room, whether it's sitting on a sunny windowsill, desk or shelf.

Because Aloe Vera stores water in its fleshy leaves, it only needs occasional watering, making it a practical choice for beginners and anyone looking for a low-maintenance houseplant. Aloe Vera is also well known for the soothing gel found inside its leaves.

  • Easy-care succulent: a low-maintenance choice for beginners and experienced plant lovers
  • Architectural foliage: thick, fleshy green leaves form an attractive rosette
  • Low watering needs: stores water in its leaves and copes well with dry periods
  • Loves sunshine: ideal for a bright, sunny position indoors
  • Choose your size: available in 10.5cm or 12cm pots, singly or as a pair

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration purposes only and is not included with the plant.

As this is a natural product, each Aloe Vera plant is individual and may vary slightly in size, shape and leaf colour.

Watering Allow the compost to dry well between waterings, then water thoroughly and let all excess drain away. These plants cope better with being slightly dry than sitting in wet compost, so never leave the pot standing in water. Reduce watering significantly through the cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright light with some gentle direct sun, ideally at around 15-24°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use well-drained soil and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. A warm, airy position and lower humidity suit this plant better than a steamy or constantly damp room.

How do I care for an Aloe Vera plant?

Place your Aloe Vera somewhere bright with plenty of sunlight. Allow the compost to dry well between waterings, then water thoroughly and let all excess water drain away. Water much less during the cooler, darker months and never leave the pot standing in water. A free-draining cactus or succulent compost is ideal.

Is Aloe Vera safe for cats and dogs?

No. The RHS lists Aloe vera as harmful if eaten by pets, including cats, dogs and rabbits. Keep the plant out of reach of pets that like to chew houseplants. If you think your pet has eaten part of an Aloe Vera plant, contact your vet for advice.

Why are my Aloe Vera leaves turning soft or brown?

Soft or unhealthy leaves can be a sign of too much water, particularly if the compost remains wet for long periods. Allow the compost to dry between waterings and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Strong changes in light can also affect the appearance of the foliage, so introduce an Aloe Vera gradually to much stronger direct sunlight.

Which Aloe Vera pot size should I choose?

Choose the 10.5cm pot for the smaller available size or the 12cm pot if you would prefer the larger option. Both sizes are available as a single plant or as a pair, so you can choose the combination that best suits your space.

Is Aloe Vera a good plant for beginners?

Yes. Aloe Vera is a low-maintenance succulent that stores water in its fleshy leaves, so it doesn't need frequent watering. Give it plenty of light, allow the compost to dry between waterings and avoid leaving the roots sitting in wet compost.

Does Aloe Vera produce new plants?

Mature Aloe Vera plants can produce small offsets, often called pups, around the base. These can eventually be separated and grown on as individual plants. RHS recommends separating offsets in spring or early summer and rooting them in cactus compost.

Top tip

Give it plenty of light and resist watering on a fixed schedule; allowing the compost to dry between waterings is usually the safest approach. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
