How to Care for Waxed Amaryllis Bulbs
Waxed amaryllis bulbs are easier to plant and care for than most other plants. They don’t need soil or water to flower, and you can get the best results by following a few simple steps.
- Grow indoors in a spot with bright indirect light, at a temperature between 7 and 25 degrees, and away from direct heat sources, which can cause the bulb and wax to dry out.
- Once the first of the two stems has blossomed, cut the stem at the base, just above the bulb. This gives a third stem a chance to grow.
- If no new stems start to form within 4 weeks of cutting the first stem off, the bulb has finished flowering.
- Remove the metal base and wax, and the bulb can then be planted into a pot with soil to allow it to root.
- Once rooted, after about 9 months, the bulb will start to flower again.
As this is a natural product, each bulb is individual and may vary in shape, size and flowering time. Flower colour may also vary.

Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Protect from hard frost and cold, drying winds, especially while young or when grown in containers.
