Watering Keep the soil consistently moist while the crop is establishing and growing, especially during flowering, fruiting or rapid leafy growth. Water deeply at the base rather than little and often, allowing excess water to drain away. Plants in containers, grow bags or greenhouses may need daily checks during warm weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or light partial shade in acidic, well-drained ericaceous soil or compost. Keep the root zone evenly moist and use rainwater where tap water is very hard. A sheltered position helps protect blossom and developing fruit from strong winds.

Top tip

Use rainwater where practical in hard-water areas and avoid planting too deeply, as these acid-loving plants prefer their roots close to the surface. It works particularly well in a containers setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
