  • Clematis Candy Stripe is a true standout, known for its eye-catching, striped flowers that bring instant flair to summer gardens. The blooms showcase a delightful mix of pinks and gentler hues, a bold contrast that really stands out against the backdrop of green foliage and other plants.

  • Perfect for patios and smaller gardens, this clematis does well in containers with some sort of support. It can also be trained to climb trellises and fences, resulting in a vibrant vertical display. It's especially striking near places where people sit, allowing the intricate flowers to be seen up close.

  • Grow them in soil that drains easily and is full of good stuff, putting the plant in full sun or some shade, but keeping the roots cool. Water regularly when it's dry, and put down mulch around the base to help the soil stay damp. Trim the plant back in early spring to encourage new flowers and to keep it looking tidy.

Watering Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in partial shade to gentle sun in fertile, well-drained loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Top tip

Tie new growth loosely onto its support while stems are young, checking ties regularly so they do not cut into expanding shoots. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
