  • Clematis Gipsy Queen, a perennial favourite, is a climber that rewards with a profusion of sizable, deeply hued purple blooms all summer long. These flowers, with their velvety texture, make a striking statement when allowed to climb over structures like arches, pergolas, or fences.

  • This vigorous variety is perfect for injecting depth and contrast into borders and climbing arrangements. It looks particularly stunning alongside pale roses, plants with silvery foliage, or softer pastel blooms. Furthermore, it thrives in large patio pots, offering a bold focal point and extended seasonal color.

  • Plant in soil that's moist, yet drains well, and give it sun or partial shade. Keep the roots cool by mulching or planting low around the base. Offer strong support for climbing stems, and water during dry periods as it gets established. Prune back hard in early spring to spur on vigorous new growth and plenty of flowers.

Watering Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Top tip

Tie new growth loosely onto its support while stems are young, checking ties regularly so they do not cut into expanding shoots. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
