The Ficus Elastica Mix, commonly known as the Rubber Plant, is a striking indoor houseplant with thick, glossy foliage and a bold tropical appearance. Plants are selected at random from a mixed tray, with foliage ranging from rich green to attractive cream or pink variegated forms.

Easy to care for and naturally architectural, the Rubber Plant is a great choice for both beginner and experienced plant owners. Your plant will arrive in an 8.5cm plastic growing pot, making it a compact young plant that's ready to grow on and develop into an impressive indoor feature.

  • Glossy foliage: thick, shiny leaves create a bold, architectural look
  • Mixed varieties: selected at random from a mixed tray of Rubber Plants
  • Varied colours: the mix includes green, cream and pink-toned foliage
  • Compact starter size: supplied in an 8.5cm plastic growing pot
  • Beginner friendly: an easy-care houseplant with plenty of character

Please note: plants are selected at random from a mixed tray, so the exact variety or foliage colour cannot be chosen.

The decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration purposes only and is not included with the plant.

As this is a natural product, the plant you receive may vary from the photographs in foliage colour, markings, height, shape and number of leaves.

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

Which Rubber Plant variety will I receive?

Each plant is selected at random from a mixed tray of Ficus Elastica varieties, so the exact variety cannot be chosen. The assortment includes plants with rich green foliage as well as cream and pink-toned variegated forms.

How do I care for a Ficus Elastica?

Keep your Rubber Plant in a warm position with plenty of bright, indirect light. Water thoroughly once the upper compost has started to dry, allow excess water to drain away and never leave the pot standing in water. Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months and occasionally wipe the broad leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Is the Rubber Plant safe for pets?

Rubber Plants are best kept away from pets that may chew houseplants. Ficus elastica contains a milky sap, and RHS guidance for Rubber Plant cultivars warns that the plant can be harmful if eaten and that its sap can irritate skin. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children, and wear gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems.

Why is my Rubber Plant dropping leaves?

Leaf drop can happen when a Rubber Plant experiences changes in light, temperature or watering. Keep it somewhere warm and bright, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, and avoid leaving the compost constantly wet.

How big will my Rubber Plant grow?

Your Rubber Plant arrives as a young plant in an 8.5cm growing pot, but Ficus Elastica naturally develops into a much larger houseplant as it matures. Its eventual indoor size will depend on the variety, available space and growing conditions.

Do variegated Rubber Plants need more light?

Variegated Rubber Plants generally benefit from plenty of bright, indirect light to help maintain their cream or pink foliage markings. Protect the leaves from prolonged strong direct sunlight, which can scorch them.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
