Grow your own figs and enjoy the satisfaction with our Fig Trees (Ficus carica) These attractive fruit trees with delicious, sweet fruits can be picked from and give a Mediterranean feel to the garden when grown in a warm, sunny and sheltered position.

Choose from Brown Turkey, Rouge de Bordeaux, Gustissimo Perretta or Mixed, with each variety offering its own characteristics and flavour. Fig trees are well suited to sunny gardens and can also be grown in large patio containers, where restricting the roots can help encourage fruit production.

Ficus carica prefers a sheltered spot with plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil. Keep young plants watered while they establish and provide additional water during prolonged hot, dry weather.

Please note that fig trees are deciduous. They naturally lose their leaves during autumn and winter and will most likely be supplied without leaves between November and May. This is completely normal and does not mean the plant is unhealthy. Fresh foliage will begin to appear again as temperatures rise and the tree comes out of its winter dormancy.

Hardy, attractive and rewarding to grow, Fig Trees are a wonderful choice for anyone looking to enjoy fresh, homegrown fruit from their own garden.

Watering Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then allow the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Established Mediterranean herbs prefer free-draining conditions and generally need less water than leafy crops. Container-grown plants will still need checking frequently during warm, dry weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile loam, enriched with organic matter where appropriate. Choose an open position with good airflow and enough space for the crop to mature without excessive competition. Protect tender crops from late frost and cold winds, and use greenhouse or sheltered growing conditions where the variety requires extra warmth.

Top tip

Mulch around the root zone each spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. It works particularly well in an allotment setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
