Carpet moss is a live, flat sheet moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) that arrives ready to lay straight onto soil, wood or rock, with no shaping or trimming needed. Its dense, velvety texture creates a natural green covering from the moment it's unpacked, which is why it's a popular choice for terrariums, moss walls and vivariums.

This large box suits bigger projects such as terrarium bases, moss walls, orchid pots and kokedama. It's just as useful for seasonal work, with florists and crafters using it to line wreath rings and dress festive arrangements, so if you're after fresh moss for sale for Christmas, this is a ready-to-use option.

  • Cut and packed fresh to order
  • Flat, low-growing habit, suited to terrariums and shaded garden ground cover
  • Low maintenance when kept in suitable moist, shaded conditions
  • We offer this moss in two convenient box sizes to suit a range of projects: small box (approx. 7.5cm x 15cm x 20cm) and large box (approx. 15cm x 30cm x 40cm). Both options provide generous coverage with 4 x sheets of moss and are packed fresh for quality.

As this is a natural product, each sheet is individual and may vary slightly in shade, texture or thickness depending on harvest conditions. Colour is usually deeper green when moist and may look duller if it has dried slightly in transit; light misting can help it rehydrate.

Light Required Low to bright indirect light; avoid direct sunlight

Watering Keep consistently moist; mist regularly and do not allow to dry out.

Best Growing Conditions Thrives in consistently moist conditions with high humidity and indirect light.

What is carpet moss used for?

It's a flat, spreading moss used as ground cover in terrariums, vivariums and reptile habitats, and as a decorative layer in planters, moss walls and kokedama. It's also popular in floristry, for lining wreath rings and dressing festive displays.

What size box should I choose, small or large?

The large box (approx. 15cm x 30cm x 40cm, 4 sheets) suits full terrarium bases, moss walls, or several projects at once. The small box works better for a single terrarium, one or two orchid pots, or a small wreath.

How do I keep carpet moss fresh or alive once it arrives?

Unpack it as soon as you can and mist it lightly. If you're not using it straight away, keep it in a cool, shaded spot and mist daily so it doesn't dry out. It doesn't need soil to stay alive, just consistent moisture.

Does carpet moss need soil to grow?

No. Carpet moss doesn't have true roots and can grow across surfaces such as bark, rock and suitable terrarium substrates. It absorbs moisture across its surface rather than relying on a conventional root system, so it is often used as a living top layer rather than planted like a typical garden plant.

Is this the same moss sold as "Christmas moss"?

No. Christmas moss usually refers to Vesicularia montagnei, an aquatic moss commonly used in aquariums. Carpet moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) is a different species, although it can still be used for festive wreaths, table displays and craft projects.

Is carpet moss safe around pets?

Carpet moss isn't intended for pets to eat. Keep it out of reach if your pet is likely to chew plant material, and discourage them from eating the moss or any natural debris that may be present.
