    Best Growing Conditions Ferns are easy to maintain and prefer well draining, moist, lightweight soil that is rich in humus. Sandy or humus soils with good drainage are ideal, but heavy clay soils should be avoided or amended to improve aeration and drainage. In the Spring after the last frost, remove old fronds to allow new growth to uncurl.
