The Helleborus Christmas Rose in Seagrass Basket is a beautiful winter-flowering plant presented in a woven seagrass basket, making it a thoughtful Christmas gift for gardeners and plant lovers. Its large, white, flat-faced flowers rise above low-growing, leathery deep-green foliage, bringing fresh colour during the colder months.

Supplied in a 12cm plastic growing pot inside the seagrass basket, the Christmas Rose can be enjoyed indoors while flowering before being planted outside. Once outdoors, this hardy perennial can return year after year, bringing winter colour to garden borders, patio pots and window boxes.

  • Winter-flowering: large white flowers bring colour through winter and into early spring
  • Seagrass basket: supplied in a 12cm growing pot displayed inside a woven basket
  • Indoors then outdoors: enjoy it indoors while flowering, then plant it outside
  • Hardy perennial: can return and flower again in subsequent years
  • Pollinator friendly: pollen-rich flowers provide food for early pollinating insects

For a simple Christmas table display, individual flower heads can also be snipped and floated in a shallow bowl of water.

As this is a natural product, each plant is individual and may vary in size, shape and number of buds or flowers.

Watering Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone consistently moist while the rose establishes. Once established, water thoroughly during dry spells, directing water to the base rather than over the foliage. Container-grown roses dry out faster and should be checked regularly in warm weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in partial shade to gentle sun in fertile, well-drained loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

What care does the basket Christmas rose need?

Keep it in a cool, bright room away from radiators, and water whenever the compost surface feels dry. Tip away any water that pools in the basket. After flowering, plant it outside in a shady spot so it can bloom again.

Can I keep it indoors all year?

It's best enjoyed indoors while in flower, then moved outside. It's a hardy garden plant that needs cold winters and outdoor conditions to thrive, so plant it in a border or patio pot once the flowers fade.

Is it safe around pets and children?

No. Helleborus niger is harmful if eaten according to the RHS, and that applies to pets too. The sap can also irritate skin. Keep the basket out of reach, and keep floating flower heads away from children and animals.

Will it flower again next year?

Yes, once planted outside it should return to flower in later winters, from midwinter into early spring. Give it partial shade, rich soil and an autumn mulch, and it will build up into a bigger clump over the years.

Is the basket suitable as a Christmas gift?

Yes, that's what it's designed for. The plant comes in a seagrass wicker basket, so it's ready to hand over without extra wrapping. It suits gardeners and plant lovers, and they can plant it out after the festive season.

Top tip

Deadhead faded flowers through the season to keep the display tidy and encourage further blooms where the variety is repeat-flowering. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
