  • Iris bulbs are elegant, hardy perennials known for their sword-like foliage and striking blooms in a range of colours including purples, yellows, blues and whites. Flowering from late Spring into early Summer, iris blooms add height, structure, and colour to garden beds. The flowers are particularly attractive to bees and butterflies, making them a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly gardens. Depending on the variety, iris plants can reach heights of up to 90 cm and return year after year with minimal effort.

  • Plant iris bulbs or rhizomes from late Summer into Autumn in fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a sunny position, and plant the bulbs just below the surface, around 8-10cm deep and 10-15cm apart. After planting, water well to help them establish. Add mulch or compost to improve soil structure and drainage. Once flowering finishes, remove any faded flowers and yellowing leaves. Irises are drought-tolerant once established and require little care.

  • Ideal for borders, rockeries, and containers, iris bulbs create a beautiful vertical accent. Their upright growth habit and dramatic flowers complement lower-growing bedding plants and grasses. Irises thrive in full sun and suit a wide range of garden styles, from traditional cottage borders to modern minimalist beds. They also make superb cut flowers, bringing a touch of spring elegance indoors. Plant in groups or drifts for the most eye-catching effect.

    Watering Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During active growth, water in prolonged dry spells so the soil stays lightly moist but never waterlogged. Once the foliage naturally dies back, reduce watering and allow the bulbs to rest more dryly.

    Best Growing Conditions Plant in fertile loam in sun or partial shade. Choose a position that does not stay waterlogged in winter, as good drainage helps bulbs return reliably. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can store energy for the following season.
