  • Liatris spicata, often called Blazing Star, is a striking and straightforward perennial, blooming in the summer. This robust plant can soar to heights of 70 centimetres, showcasing slender leaves and dense clusters of vibrant lavender-hued, bottlebrush-like flowers from July through September. A unique, clump-forming perennial, it's a boon for pollinators, drawing in bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. The RHS Plant for Pollinators seal of approval is a testament to its value.

  • For best results, plant these liatris bulbs in the spring. They thrive in fertile, well-draining soil, ideally in a warm, sunny, and sheltered location. Plant the corms 15 centimetres deep, spacing them 10 to 20 centimetres apart. After planting, give them a good drink, and then water weekly during the growing season. Once the flowers have faded, snip off the stems, but keep the leaves. You can trim the leaves back in the fall.

  • These bulbs are perfect for flower beds, garden borders, or even patio pots. They're also lovely as cut flowers, bringing their beauty indoors. Liatris really shines when paired with other purple and blue-hued plants, especially Festuca Grass, Echinacea, Lavender, and Allium. If you're not planting bulbs right away, store them in a cool, dry, frost-free place with good ventilation.
