The Lithops Living Stones are tiny succulents that look just like pebbles. It is a disguise that helps them survive in the wild. Each plant has its own shape and markings, so no two lithops stones are quite the same, and they always get people talking.

Their unusual appearance makes them an eye-catching choice for desks, shelves and windowsills. They're wonderfully low maintenance once you understand their unusual watering cycle, making them a fascinating alternative to more familiar houseplants.

  • Pebble-like appearance: distinctive pairs of fleshy, patterned leaves
  • Individual markings: colours and patterns naturally vary from plant to plant
  • Daisy-like flowers: mature plants can produce yellow or white flowers
  • New leaf growth: a fresh pair of leaves develops as the older pair shrivels
  • Choose 1, 2 or 3 plants: each supplied in its own 9cm pot

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration only and is not included.

As this is a natural product, each plant is individual and may vary in shape, size, colour and markings.

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light, ideally at around 15-24°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use well-drained soil and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

How do I care for Lithops Living Stones?

Keep Lithops in a very bright position and grow them in gritty, free-draining compost. Water according to their growth cycle rather than on a fixed schedule, allowing the compost to dry thoroughly between waterings. Keep them dry or almost dry during dormancy, and avoid watering while a new pair of leaves is developing from the old pair.

Why is my Lithops wrinkling or splitting?

Lithops periodically replace their old pair of leaves with fresh growth from the centre. As the new leaves develop, the older pair can wrinkle, split and gradually dry away. This is part of their natural growth cycle, so avoid pulling the old leaves away and be particularly careful about watering during this stage.

Are Lithops safe for pets?

There isn't clear authoritative UK guidance classifying Lithops as either toxic or non-toxic to pets, so we wouldn't describe them as pet-friendly. If your cat or dog tends to chew houseplants, keep Lithops out of reach. If you think your pet has eaten part of the plant and you're concerned, contact your vet for advice.

Should I choose 1, 2 or 3 Lithops plants?

Choose one for a simple individual display, or two or three if you'd like a larger group of Living Stones. Each plant is supplied in its own 9cm pot, and natural differences in shape, colour and markings mean every plant is individual.

Are Lithops good for beginners?

Lithops can suit beginners, but their watering cycle is different from most houseplants. The key is not to water on a fixed schedule. Give them plenty of light, allow the compost to dry thoroughly and reduce or stop watering during their dormant and leaf-replacement stages.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
