The Lucky Bamboo Spiral Stems are beautifully shaped stems of Dracaena sanderiana, standing around 40 cm tall. Their distinctive twists create an elegant, architectural display for modern interiors, desks, shelves and decorative planters.

Despite its name, lucky bamboo isn't actually bamboo but a member of the Dracaena genus. Traditionally associated with good fortune in Feng Shui, it makes a meaningful choice for gifting at home or work.

  • Spiral stems: selected for strong form, vibrant colour and clean shaping
  • Around 40cm tall: a compact, architectural display for desks and shelves
  • Choose 3 or 4 stems: create a smaller or fuller arrangement
  • Water or soil: the stems can be grown in either
  • Ready to display: place the stems into your chosen vase or suitable container

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration only and is not included.

As this is a natural product, each stem is individual and may show variation in height, twist and leaf growth. The spiral won't carry on by itself, as new shoots at the top grow towards the light.

Foliage type Evergreen, Perennial

Hardiness Tropical

Soil acidity Neutral

Flower colour White

Leaf colour Green

Growth Rate Moderate

Edible Use No

Light Required Bright In-direct sunlight

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

Is lucky bamboo safe for pets?

No. The RHS lists Dracaena sanderiana as harmful to dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents if eaten. Keep lucky bamboo out of reach of pets, particularly those that like to chew houseplants. If you think your pet has eaten part of the plant, contact your vet for advice.

Should I choose 3 or 4 lucky bamboo stems?

Three stems create a lighter arrangement, while four stems give a fuller display. Both options contain spiral stems standing around 40cm tall, ready to arrange in your chosen vase or suitable container.

Can lucky bamboo grow in water or soil?

Yes. Carbeth's existing product guidance states that the stems can root in either water or soil, giving you the choice of displaying them in a vase or growing them in a suitable container.

Why are the leaves on my lucky bamboo turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves can have several causes, including watering problems, unsuitable water, too much direct sunlight or temperature stress. If you're growing lucky bamboo in water, using filtered or rainwater can help avoid problems associated with fluoride in tap water. Keep it away from harsh direct sunlight, cold draughts and strong radiator heat.

Will my lucky bamboo stems keep spiralling as they grow?

The spiral shape is created by training the stems during production. New growth won't automatically continue in the same spiral pattern, so the established twisted stems remain the main feature of the plant.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
