The Lucky Bamboo Straight Stems are an easy way to bring a calm, fresh look to your home or workspace. Their clean, upright stems and rich green foliage suit modern interiors beautifully, whether displayed on a desk, shelf or windowsill.

Despite its name, Lucky Bamboo isn't actually bamboo but a member of the Dracaena family. Traditionally associated with luck, balance and positive energy, it also makes a thoughtful gift for new homes, offices or anyone who enjoys low-maintenance plants. The stems can be grown in either water or compost, making it easy to create your own display.

  • Straight upright stems: clean, architectural shape for simple modern displays
  • Around 40cm tall: ideal for displaying in a favourite vase or container
  • Choose 3 or 4 stems: create a neat arrangement to suit your space
  • Grow in water or compost: both growing methods are suitable
  • Easy-care houseplant: a low-maintenance choice for homes and workspaces

Please note: the decorative pot or planter shown in the images is for illustration purposes only and is not included with the plant.

As this is a natural product, each stem is individual and may vary slightly in height, thickness and leaf growth.

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

How do I care for Lucky Bamboo straight stems?

Keep your Lucky Bamboo in a warm position with bright, indirect light and protection from strong direct sun. If growing the stems in water, keep the roots covered and replace the water regularly. Rainwater or filtered water is preferable where possible. If growing in compost, water when the upper layer begins to dry and allow excess water to drain away.

Can I grow Lucky Bamboo in soil instead of water?

Yes. The original Carbeth guidance confirms that these Lucky Bamboo stems can be grown in either water or soil. If growing in compost, use a suitable free-draining houseplant compost and a container with drainage holes, and avoid leaving the roots sitting in water.

Is Lucky Bamboo safe for cats and dogs?

No. The RHS lists Dracaena sanderiana as harmful if eaten by pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents. Keep Lucky Bamboo out of reach of pets that may chew houseplants. If you think your pet has eaten part of the plant, contact your vet for advice.

Should I choose 3 or 4 Lucky Bamboo stems?

Choose 3 stems for a simple, more minimal arrangement or 4 stems if you would like a fuller display. Each stem is around 40cm tall, although slight natural variation between individual stems should be expected.

Why are the leaves on my Lucky Bamboo turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves can have several causes, including unsuitable water, too much strong direct sunlight or problems with watering. Move the plant away from hot direct sun and, if growing it in water, refresh the water and use rainwater or filtered water where possible. RHS notes that fluoride in tap water can damage Dracaena foliage.

Is Lucky Bamboo actually bamboo?

No. Despite its common name, Lucky Bamboo is Dracaena sanderiana, so it belongs to the Dracaena group rather than being a true bamboo. Its upright stems and association with luck are where the familiar Lucky Bamboo name comes from.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
