The Monstera Deliciosa, better known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a popular and instantly recognisable houseplant, loved for its large, glossy green leaves with distinctive natural splits and holes. Its bold foliage brings a tropical feel to living rooms, offices and other bright indoor spaces.

Fast growing and easy to care for, Monstera Deliciosa develops larger, more dramatic foliage as it matures. Young plants often begin with solid, heart-shaped leaves, with the characteristic splits and holes developing as the plant grows. See more indoor plants.

  • Distinctive foliage: large, glossy green leaves develop natural splits and holes as they mature
  • Fast growing: develops into an impressive statement houseplant over time
  • Beginner friendly: an easy-care choice that adapts well to indoor environments
  • Natural climber: can be given support as it grows taller
  • Choose your size: available in a 9cm or 12cm pot

Please note: the decorative pot shown in the images is for illustration only and is not included.

As this is a natural product, every plant grows a little differently, so height, leaf shape and the number of split leaves will vary.

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light and protection from harsh direct sun, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a good-quality, well-drained houseplant compost and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.

How do I care for a Monstera Deliciosa?

Keep your Monstera in a warm position with plenty of bright, indirect light, protected from strong direct summer sun. Water thoroughly when the compost has started to dry, allow excess water to drain away and never leave the pot standing in water. Reduce watering during the cooler, darker months when growth slows.

Why doesn't my Monstera have holes in its leaves?

Young Monstera Deliciosa plants often have solid leaves without the characteristic splits and holes. These usually develop as the plant matures. Good light also helps, so keep your Monstera somewhere with plenty of bright, indirect light. RHS notes that young plants and Monsteras grown in poor light tend to have fewer holes.

Is Monstera Deliciosa safe for cats and dogs?

No. The RHS lists Monstera deliciosa as harmful if eaten by pets and also warns that it can irritate the skin and eyes. Keep the plant out of reach of cats, dogs and other pets that may chew houseplants. If you think your pet has eaten part of the plant, contact your vet for advice.

Should I choose the 9cm or 12cm Monstera?

Choose the 9cm pot if you'd prefer the smaller available size or the 12cm pot if you'd like the larger option. Both are young Monstera plants that can develop much larger foliage as they mature.

What should I do with my Monstera's aerial roots?

Aerial roots are a natural part of Monstera Deliciosa's climbing growth habit. As the plant gets larger, you can guide them towards a suitable support, such as a moss pole, to help the plant climb more upright. RHS confirms that Monstera naturally climbs using its aerial roots.

Is Monstera Deliciosa suitable for beginners?

Yes. The original Carbeth product information describes Monstera Deliciosa as easy to care for and suitable for both beginner and experienced plant owners. Give it bright, indirect light, avoid overwatering and provide enough space as its foliage becomes larger.

Top tip

Turn the pot a quarter turn every week or two so the plant develops evenly, and wipe broad leaves occasionally to keep them free of dust. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
