Red Baron, an award-winning red onion, is a firm favourite with gardeners for its stronger flavour—perfect for cooking or adding a punch to salads. This mid-late maturing variety produces firm, globe-shaped bulbs with deep blood-red skins and red-rimmed flesh.
Plant January to April (winter to early spring) and harvest in early autumn, about one to two weeks after the leaves begin to yellow. Store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place if not planting immediately.
Light Required Full sun
Watering Water regularly during establishment and bulb formation; reduce watering as bulbs mature.
Best Growing Conditions Plant in a sunny, open position in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while bulbs are forming, but avoid waterlogging. Harvest once the foliage begins to yellow and fall over, then dry bulbs thoroughly before storing.
