  • Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Fire’ is a striking evergreen shrub that brings colour and structure to the garden all year round. Its bright red new growth in spring is what really makes it stand out, gradually maturing into glossy deep green foliage that keeps its shape and colour through every season. It’s a great choice for borders, woodland-style gardens, or brightening up partially shaded areas that can otherwise feel a bit flat.

  • In spring, it also produces clusters of delicate white flowers that hang beneath the foliage, adding even more contrast and interest. The combination of fiery new leaves, evergreen structure, and elegant blooms gives it a much more established, premium look than many standard shrubs. Supplied as 2 plants, it’s ideal if you’re looking to create a fuller display or balanced planting straight away.

  • It’s very easy to care for once settled in. Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil in partial shade or a sheltered sunny spot, and water regularly while establishing. After that, it needs very little attention, making it a reliable, low-maintenance shrub that will continue to add colour and interest year after year.

    Watering Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than little and often, allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently in warm or windy weather.

    Best Growing Conditions Grow in partial shade to gentle sun in acidic, well-drained ericaceous soil or compost. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

    Top tip

    Remove damaged or spent growth as it appears and keep the area around the plant free from weeds so air and light can reach the base. Keep the root zone on the acidic side with ericaceous compost or suitable acidic soil, and avoid lime-based feeds.
