  • Primrose are hardy outdoor, low maintenance perennial bedding plants, botanically known as Primula. This striking variety is loved for its bright, eye-catching blooms that bring warmth and colour to the garden through the cold winter months and into early spring. Growing to around 15-20cm tall, these compact plants provide long-lasting interest and are perfect for lifting dull borders during the UK’s greyest seasons.

  • Supplied as strong, ready-to-plant bedding plants, Primrose are ideal for garden beds, edging, patio containers and window boxes. Their cheerful flowers are also an important early nectar source for bees and other pollinators, making them a great choice for wildlife-friendly planting. Once established, they are dependable perennials that will return year after year with minimal care.

  • Primroses thrive in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. They suit cottage gardens, spring displays and alpine-style planting schemes. For containers, use a multipurpose compost with added grit or perlite to improve drainage and keep roots healthy.

Watering Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone consistently moist while the rose establishes. Once established, water thoroughly during dry spells, directing water to the base rather than over the foliage. Container-grown roses dry out faster and should be checked regularly in warm weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained loam. Choose a position with good airflow and enough space for the plant to reach its mature size. Mulch after planting and keep the root zone free from prolonged waterlogging, particularly through winter.

Top tip

Deadhead faded flowers through the season to keep the display tidy and encourage further blooms where the variety is repeat-flowering. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
