Grow your own raspberries with these Raspberry Bare Root Canes, available in a choice of summer and autumn-fruiting varieties. 'Tulameen' is a popular late-season summer raspberry known for its excellent flavour, while 'Autumn Bliss' and 'Polka' extend the harvest into autumn.

Supplied bare root while dormant, the canes are ready for planting during the bare-root season. Grow summer and autumn-fruiting varieties together, and you can enjoy fresh raspberries over a longer picking season. They're a rewarding choice for beginners and work well in fruit beds, gardens and allotments. See our full range of raspberry plants and canes.

  • 'Tulameen': a late-season summer raspberry with well-flavoured red fruit
  • 'Autumn Bliss': an autumn-fruiting variety producing large red raspberries
  • 'Polka': autumn fruiting with large red berries and stout canes that need little support
  • Packs of 1, 3, 6 or 10 canes: choose the quantity to suit your growing space
  • Easy to grow: hardy raspberry canes suited to sunny, sheltered positions

As this is a natural product, each cane may vary in height and thickness. Bare root raspberry canes are supplied dormant, so they can look like bare sticks before new growth appears in spring.

Watering Keep the soil consistently moist while the crop is establishing and growing, especially during flowering, fruiting or rapid leafy growth. Water deeply at the base rather than little and often, allowing excess water to drain away. Plants in containers, grow bags or greenhouses may need daily checks during warm weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile loam, enriched with organic matter where appropriate. Choose an open position with good airflow and enough space for the crop to mature without excessive competition. Protect tender crops from late frost and cold winds, and use greenhouse or sheltered growing conditions where the variety requires extra warmth.

How do I care for raspberry canes?

Plant raspberry canes in a sunny or partly shaded, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Keep newly planted canes well watered while they establish and during dry spells, and mulch annually with organic matter. Pruning depends on the variety: summer-fruiting and autumn-fruiting raspberries are pruned differently.

Which raspberry variety should I choose?

Choose 'Tulameen' for a summer crop with excellent flavour. 'Autumn Bliss' and 'Polka' are autumn-fruiting varieties that extend the harvest into late summer and autumn. Growing both summer and autumn-fruiting varieties is a good way to enjoy raspberries over a longer picking season.

How many raspberry canes do I need?

This depends on the size of the area you want to plant. A single cane is useful for adding to an existing raspberry row, while packs of 3, 6 or 10 canes are suitable for establishing a larger row or fruit bed. Leave enough space between plants for the canes to develop and for good air circulation.

When will my raspberry canes fruit?

'Autumn Bliss' and 'Polka' fruit on the current season's growth, so newly planted canes may produce a crop in their first year. 'Tulameen' is a summer-fruiting raspberry that produces fruit on canes grown the previous year, so it generally takes longer to establish its fruiting cycle.

What's the difference between summer and autumn-fruiting raspberries?

Summer-fruiting raspberries such as 'Tulameen' produce their crop on canes that grew the previous year. Autumn-fruiting varieties such as 'Autumn Bliss' and 'Polka' produce fruit on the current year's growth. This difference also affects how the plants are pruned.

Top tip

Keep growth moving steadily with consistent watering and regular picking or harvesting once produce reaches a usable size. It works particularly well in an allotment setting; give it enough space and light to develop naturally rather than crowding it.
