For something a little different from the usual potted houseplant, this Schefflera Umbrella Plant is grown directly on a piece of natural volcanic lava stone. Its glossy green leaves sit above the rugged stone, creating an unusual display that looks great on a desk, shelf or side table.
The Schefflera, commonly known as the Umbrella Plant, grows by wrapping its roots around the lava stone. The porous stone helps hold moisture around the roots while also giving the plant support, so there's no traditional pot of compost to worry about.
Place your Schefflera somewhere with plenty of bright, indirect light and keep the lava stone supplied with moisture without leaving the plant permanently waterlogged.
Easy to display and a real talking point, this Schefflera on volcanic lava stone is a great choice if you're looking for a houseplant that's a bit more unusual.
Plant genus Schefflera
Common Name Umbrella Plant
Plant type Tropical Houseplant
Foliage type Evergreen, Perennial
Hardiness Tropical
Soil acidity Neutral
Flower colour Green, Yellow
Leaf colour Green

Watering Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the plant sitting in standing water, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Growth slows in winter, so reduce watering frequency during cooler, darker months.
Best Growing Conditions Grow in bright, indirect light, ideally at around 18-26°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Use a suitable, free-draining growing medium and make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot. Most houseplants perform best with moderate humidity and should be kept away from strong radiator heat.
