Watering Keep the soil evenly moist as the plants establish, then water more generously once tubers begin to form. Aim for consistent moisture rather than alternating between very dry and very wet conditions, which can affect tuber quality. Reduce watering as the foliage yellows and the crop approaches harvest.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained loam, enriched with organic matter where appropriate. Choose an open position with good airflow and enough space for the crop to mature without excessive competition. Protect tender crops from late frost and cold winds, and use greenhouse or sheltered growing conditions where the variety requires extra warmth.

    Top tip

Earth up emerging stems as they grow to protect developing tubers from light and help support the plants. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
