  • Spearmint is one of those herbs that’s always useful to have growing nearby. The fresh, fragrant leaves are perfect for adding to drinks, teas and cocktails, and they work just as well in cooking alongside lamb, potatoes, peas and other everyday dishes. You can pick the leaves fresh as you need them or dry them to use later on.

  • It’s really easy to grow and quickly fills out once established, giving you plenty of fresh growth through the season. Whether planted in the garden, a patio pot or on a kitchen windowsill, it adds both greenery and a lovely minty scent to the space.

  • As a hardy perennial, it comes back year after year with very little effort, making it a great choice for beginners or anyone wanting a low-maintenance herb plant that’s both practical and rewarding.

  • Plant genus Mentha

Watering Keep the soil consistently moist while the crop is establishing and growing, especially during flowering, fruiting or rapid leafy growth. Water deeply at the base rather than little and often, allowing excess water to drain away. Plants in containers, grow bags or greenhouses may need daily checks during warm weather.

Best Growing Conditions Grow in partial shade to gentle sun in fertile, well-drained loam, enriched with organic matter where appropriate. Choose an open position with good airflow and enough space for the crop to mature without excessive competition. Protect tender crops from late frost and cold winds, and use greenhouse or sheltered growing conditions where the variety requires extra warmth.

    Top tip

Keep a weed-free circle around the base while the plant establishes and mulch annually, leaving a small gap around the stem or trunk. Good drainage is especially important, so avoid leaving the roots sitting in persistently wet or compacted soil.
