This grass like houseplant has rosettes of velvety green leaves where long stems form, initially displaying as golden enclosed buds that develop into creamy white button flowers. This hard to come by, eye catching unique plant can grow to 25-30cm in height and is native to the wetlands of Southern Brazil and Uruguay. With its rarity and striking appearance this houseplant is a real conversation starter and a must have addition to any house plant enthusiast’s collection.
Since this plant originates in swampy conditions, it likes to be kept permanently moist. Water when the top of the compost is dry to the touch. The Mikao plant prefers bright, indirect light and high humidity levels of between 10 – 35 °C making it ideal for growing on a bathroom windowsill. Misting regularly or sitting the pot in a water filled tray of pebbles helps to increase humidity levels.
You should repot a Syngonanthus Mikado plant when it's doubled in size or once a year, whichever comes first. Repotting gives the plant's roots more space and fresh soil. When repotting, use a well draining, acidic potting soil like a carnivorous potting mix.
