Season of Interest

Flowering in Summer. Foliage all year round.

  • FLOWERING: Evergreen shrub featuring white hairy stems with green leaves and white underside. Produces light blue flowers during summer. Has lovely lemony scent and is bee friendly.

  • GROWTH: Easy to grow, in well-drained alkaline soil in a sheltered border with full sun or against a warm sunny wall.

  • LOCATION: Perfect to grow in city, country and costal gardens from May to November.

  • PRUNING: The Teucrium Fruticans likes being clipped back after flowering, and can be trained into hedges and shapes.

Light Required

Unless a site is completely exposed, light conditions will change during the day and even during the year. The northern and eastern sides of a house receive the least amount of light, with the northern exposure being the shadiest. The western and southern sides of a house receive the most light and are considered the hottest exposures due to intense afternoon sun. You will notice that sun and shade patterns change during the day. The western side of a house may even be shady due to shadows cast by large trees or a structure from an adjacent property. If you have just bought a new home or just beginning to garden in your older home, take time to map sun and shade throughout the day. You will get a more accurate feel for your site's true light conditions.

Watering

Drought-tolerant once established but does best when watered every 14 days in spring through fall and every three to four weeks in winter; in low-desert gardens, water every seven to 10 days in summer

Best Growing Conditions

Teucrium fruticans needs full sun exposure and a Mediterranean climate. They resist occasional frosts. They can grow in any type of soil that has good drainage. Transplant in fall or spring. Throughout the year, water moderately, waiting for the soil to dry out; they resist drought well. They can be lightly pruned in late winter to keep them compact. Fertilize with manure at the time of planting and with mineral fertilizer once a month in spring and summer. They are very resistant shrubs to pests but very sensitive to excess moisture. They are propagated by seeds or by division in spring and by cuttings in summer.
